What We Don't Like About The Abbey The pool is tiny. The quality of service has varied widely in the past. But the management appears to working on this and has brought on better trained staff. Even though it has the perfect ocean-facing location, all the rooms look out onto the city and the mountains. Past guests who stayed here when it was a "mainstream" hotel called the Torre de Oro will notice that the prices have increased considerably.
What We Do Like About The Abbey The hotel is small and has a quaint atmosphere, so you definitely won't feel you're at an impersonal North American-style resort. It's been the defacto host hotel for Beef Dip - the leather an bear week. The hotel has long had a reputation for its gay friendliness, well before it transformed itself into a gay hotel in 2006. Even though it bills itself as "exclusively for gay men", The Abbey welcomes lesbians as well as straight friends travelling with gay men - just so long as they understand that the hotel clientele is primarily gay men. It is right in the centre of things, a short walk from the Blue Chairs on the gay beach and close to clubs and restaurants.
